11 Reasons for Choosing the Winnebago Travato 59K
11 Reasons for Choosing the Winnebago Travato 59K
Plus, top upgrades in the latest model of this beloved camper van!
By: Morgan Field
If you’re deciding between a Class B and a Class C, exploring which camper van layout is for you, or wondering if downsizing from a larger RV like a fifth wheel or Class A could actually give you more freedom, this article is for you.
I’m Morgan Field, roaming in my 2019 Winnebago Travato 59K with my pup-pilot Teddy (a professional joy-spreader, and sniff connoisseur). When I bought my Travato 59K, I was making a choice based on lifestyle—size, drivability, layout, and ease for boondocking, moochdocking, and off-grid adventures. What I didn’t realize at the time was how many of my favorite parts of ownership would reveal themselves later.
Some of the reasons I chose it were practical, but some of the reasons I love it now were unexpected. And if I had to do it all over again? I’d choose the same RV ... this time with even more confidence.
Here are 11 reasons why I chose the Winnebago Travato 59K, and why it might be the right fit for you also …
1. No Height Clearance Mental Gymnastics
With larger RVs, you need to consider height clearance, bridge limits, and tight turns.
With the 59K? At 9'4" tall, my only real rules are simple: no drive-throughs and no public garages under 10 feet (just to be safe). Beyond that, I drive it like a van—not like a rolling house that requires constant spatial math.
That mental ease matters more than people realize.
2. It Can Be a Daily Driver
No tow vehicle. No extra length to learn to navigate. When I’m traveling, my Winnebago Travato is my everything vehicle.
Groceries? Easy. Errands, exploring a town, or pit stops into a charming local gem? Easy. Trailhead parking? Easy.
That simplicity was a big deciding factor for me.
3. The Community is Everything
The Winnebago community is truly special. From Winnie Bs and the GoLife Community, to events like Camp Winnebago (returning in 2028) and the Winnebago owner’s booth at the Florida RV SuperShow, it feels like being part of something bigger than just owning an RV.
When you have an RV like the Travato, there are incredible events to attend and connect with a like-hearted tribe—from VanFest LIFTOFF in Florida, to VanFest Escape the Cape in Cape Cod, and Peace Love Vans in Florida and Colorado.
Then there’s Travato Owners & Wannabees. Almost every RV has a Facebook group, but this one is different. There are techs, resourceful owners, endless mods, troubleshooting threads, and practical fixes. When I thought I needed a new A/C, a $20 mod solved it. When my batteries stopped charging while driving, the group helped me identify a simple $20 solenoid fix instead of an expensive repair.
The money it has saved me, and the peace of mind it has provided, is priceless.
4. Gas Mileage That Extends the Adventure
Newer models may be even more efficient, but I average 14-18 MPG in my 2019 Travato. And honestly? For an RV, that still blows my mind.
If you’re debating between Class B and Class C, or downsizing from a larger rig, fuel economy alone is worth serious consideration. It gives you range, flexibility, and softens the financial edge of spontaneous road trips.
5. Stealth Mode (As Much as an RV Can Be)
Can you stealth camp in a 21-foot van? Surprisingly… yes. (Always check local regulations, of course.)
In my Winnebago Travato, I can:
- Fit into most normal parking spaces
- Parallel park at a meter
- Park on residential streets
- Stay overnight in a wide range of places without drawing much attention
That flexibility is freedom.
6. Minimal Campsite Setup
When I pull into a campsite, I plug in electric and I’m done.
Meanwhile, larger rigs are:
- Leveling
- Hooking up water
- Hooking up sewer
- Extending slides
There’s nothing wrong with that, but I wanted simple.
7. Ram ProMaster Chassis Preference
Before choosing a chassis, it’s worth researching what maintenance support looks like in your area—proximity, availability, and overall ease can make a meaningful difference over time.
I have an accessible Ram BusinessLink service option nearby. They even offer a shuttle to my home for longer appointments and are dog-friendly for shorter visits like oil changes—which means Teddy is happily spoiled with treats and attention while we wait.
For me, service access and convenience mattered.
8. I Can Bring My Dog Everywhere
This one is huge for me. My dog can safely travel with me due to having easy parking, a generator for temperature control, and my added MarCELL temperature monitoring system
Errand days become nourishing. Traffic becomes a chance to park somewhere scenic and read. Lunch breaks turn into cuddle sessions and quiet resets.
That lifestyle shift is priceless.
9. Having a Generator is Very Convenient
Traveling in an RV with a dog, the generator provides real peace of mind. If I’m running the A/C, I don’t have to stress about draining the batteries. The generator powers the A/C system while simultaneously charging the batteries.
It also reduces single points of failure. If the batteries are low, I can’t get on the road to recharge, there’s no shore power available, and solar isn’t enough—I can simply run the generator.
More redundancy. More flexibility. Less anxiety. And a whole lot more ease.
10. No Storage Lot Required
I didn’t want to store my RV offsite. I wanted something I could access easily—grab a bag and head out on a day trip whenever I felt like it.
Many HOAs and residential communities that restrict larger rigs are more flexible with Class B vans ... though not all, so it’s essential to ask before you buy. It’s also wise to review your local city regulations ahead of time. Where you live, and what’s permitted, matters more than you might think.
11. Awesome Layout
For me, layout was everything.
I’m sensory sensitive, and space deeply affects my nervous system. The Winnebago Travato 59K feels expansive in a way I didn’t expect—windows everywhere, light pouring in, and views of nature from nearly every angle.
I keep the aisle open while I work or relax, then convert the twin beds into a king at night so my pup and I can stretch out. The storage is generous throughout—overhead cabinets, under the passenger bed, in the kitchen, and even above the cab seats.
The bathroom is surprisingly roomy, with windows that bring in natural light while I’m getting ready. There’s a medicine cabinet for toiletries, wall space to hang things, a towel rack, and a wardrobe and drawers that hold more than you’d expect.
And I love the flexibility of the TV—I can watch a movie in bed, swivel it toward the front seats, or even turn it outward for viewing from outside.
The fridge/freezer is smaller, but the light and openness were worth the trade-off. I added a lavender BougeRV 23-quart mini fridge for extra freezer space, and there’s still room by the door for a storage tote with games, pickleball gear, layers, and snacks.
Living in a smaller footprint requires adaptability; however, the front seats swivel into an office or dining area and the beds convert. The space shifts throughout the day. What once felt like extra steps now feels like meditative rituals—slowing me down, grounding my energy, and reminding me to care for my nervous system.
What I Love About the Newer Travato Models (2026 Upgrades)
As much as I adore my 2019, I pay close attention to the updates each year—and the newest 2026 Winnebago Travato 59K enhancements are impressive.
One of the most talked-about changes is the gas-powered Truma heating system. Having the heat tied directly to your main fuel tank means you can run your heat freely, knowing you can refuel at virtually any gas station—no extra stops or propane-fill logistics required.
Another major upgrade is adaptive cruise control, which automatically adjusts your speed to maintain a set distance from the vehicle ahead—a true game-changer on long drives. The updated chassis also includes enhanced safety features like blind-spot monitoring, crosswind assist, and a digital rear-view mirror.
Additional standout improvements include:
- Enhanced insulation for better temperature stability
- Girard awning—sturdy, reliable, and worry-free
- WinnSleep mattress—soft, supportive, and ready for a great night’s sleep right from the factory
What I especially appreciate is how many owner-inspired upgrades now come standard. Features that once required aftermarket additions—like premium cushion materials, a dedicated kitchen water pump switch, spice rack, fridge storage bins, and even an extra kitchen drawer—are thoughtfully built in.
It’s clear that Winnebago listens to owners and evolves the Travato each year based on real-world use and feedback.
Final Thoughts: Is a Winnebago Travato 59K Right for You?
The Winnebago Travato 59K might be a great fit if you:
- Want to avoid the complexity of larger rigs
- Value maneuverability and ease of driving
- Care about fuel efficiency
- Love spontaneous travel—from day trips to boondocking and moochdocking
- Want the highest likelihood of HOA or residential parking approval
- Prefer an RV that can double as a daily-use vehicle
- Appreciate a strong community that saves you money, reduces stress, and adds joy to the journey
If that sounds like you, the Winnebago Travato 59K might surprise you. For me, it wasn’t just about square footage; it was about ease, nervous system regulation, and freedom without overwhelm.
No matter which RV you choose, I’m wishing you joyous adventures ahead!
