Comparing Winnebago’s Revel, EKKO & ARKA: Which is Your Ideal Backcountry Rig?
Learn more about the features that make these three rigs shine in off-road conditions.

By: Peter & Kathy Holcombe

Winnebago's Backcountry lineup has grown into one of the most capable families of adventure vehicles on the market. What started with the Revel has evolved into three distinct rigs, each built for a different kind of traveler. The good news: there's no wrong choice here, just the right choice for how, where, and with whom you plan to explore.

Let's break down the Revel, EKKO, and new ARKA adventure van to find the perfect fit for your backcountry style.

Winnebago Revel: Where It All Started

Before there was an EKKO or ARKA, there was the Revel, the van that put Winnebago on the map as a serious player in the off-grid overland adventure space. When the Revel launched, few believed a mainstream RV brand could build a vehicle this genuinely off-road capable, four-season ready, and off-grid self-sufficient.

The Revel changed that conversation, proving this wasn't a niche experiment but a preview of where adventure travel was headed. This is the rig that paved the way for adventure van traveling as we know it and everything that followed in Winnebago's Backcountry Series lineup.

Winnebago Revel Series Highlights:

  • Built on the compact 144" Mercedes-Benz Sprinter AWD chassis, the Revel proved that a Class B van could genuinely go off-road, stay off-grid for a week or more, and do it all in a package small enough to fit in a standard grocery store parking space.
  • The Revel pairs a punchy 2.0L high-output turbo diesel engine (211 hp, 332 pounds of torque) and Winnebago power systems integrated with the EcoFlow Power Hub Pro management controller. The Revel Sport features the Winnebago Power system, driven by a a 5kWh EcoFlow lithium-ion battery. The Revel also upgrades to the Winnebago Power Max system, delivering a 8.4 kWh of lithium power expandable to 16.8 kWh.
  • A 24-gallon (Revel Sport) and 35-gallon (Revel) freshwater tank keeps you self-sufficient, while 3M Thinsulate insulation, hydronic heating, and honeycomb composite flooring make it genuinely four-season capable.
  • Inside, a power-lift bed, a versatile wet bath/gear closet with a cassette toilet, and seamless cab-to-living-area pass-through access make smart use of every square inch.
  • High-clearance, optional customized performance wheels and BF Goodrich® T/A KO2 all-terrain tires give the Revel series trail credibility.
  • As the pioneering entry in Winnebago's backcountry lineup, Revel also benefits from one of the largest aftermarket ecosystems in the Class B world.

Who is the Winnebago Revel ideal for?

The Winnebago Revel would be a great option for solo travelers or couples who prioritize maximum agility, parking convenience, and easy maneuverability on tight, technical shelf roads—including those planning international overland travel where a compact footprint is critical.

Winnebago EKKO: More Room to Roam

Building on everything the Revel established, Winnebago introduced the EKKO to give travelers significantly more living space without sacrificing too much off-road capability.

The EKKO is built on both the Ford® Transit chassis and the Mercedes-Benz® Sprinter chassis, offering two great options with many of the same off-grid ready features. The EKKO Transit (nicknamed the “TrEKKO” by owners), offers a shorter length, a lower price point, and a larger fuel tank.

The EKKO Sprinter (nicknamed the “SprEKKO” by owners) offers enhanced off-road capability with higher ground clearance, enhanced tech and safety features, and a wide range of off-road modification options that have made the Revel so popular in the aftermarket world.

Winnebago EKKO Series Highlights:

  • EKKO Transit: Built on the AWD Ford Transit chassis with 3.5L EcoBoost® V6 gas engine, 10-speed automatic Selectshift® transmission with overdrive, 156” wheelbase, and all-season tires designed to provide smooth, fuel-efficient drives.
  • EKKO Sprinter: Built on the Mercedes-Benz AWD Sprinter chassis with 2.0L high-output, turbo-diesel 4-cylinder engine, 9-speed automatic transmission with overdrive, 170” wheelbase, and all-terrain tires designed to handle backcountry trails.
  • Impressive off-grid power comes standard on both chassis variations, both offering a 320Ah Lithionics lithium battery (upgradable to 630Ah). The EKKO Transit comes standard with 2,800W gas generator and 510W solar, while the EKKO Sprinter comes standard with a 2,500W LP generator and 530W solar.
  • All-season capability extends time spent outdoors with all water lines and 50-gallon freshwater and 51-gallon gray water tanks inside the coach, all-season insulation in the roof, walls, and floors, and dual-pane acrylic windows.
  • Residential-style comfort along for every adventure, including a roomy rear bedroom featuring a Flex Bed system with WinnSleep mattress, a signature dry-wet bath with a space-saving pivoting wall, a cassette toilet, and a massive, heated gear garage accessible from outside.
  • With the optional pop-top, the EKKO sleeps up to four, making it a genuine option for small families. The EKKO Sprinter offers a multifunctional lounge that easily converts into four modes, including one additional sleeping.

Winnebago ARKA: Built for the Long Haul

The newest member of the family, the Winnebago ARKA, takes everything the Revel and EKKO demonstrated about off-grid living and scales it up to expedition-grade proportions. Built on a heavy-duty RAM 5500 4x4 chassis with clean underbody and massive 41-inch all-terrain tires, the ARKA joins Revel and EKKO in Winnebago's Backcountry Series, designed for overlanders who want to venture far beyond infrastructure and operate in extreme environments.

Winnebago ARKA Highlights:

  • Hydronic heating, heated tanks and floors, and an industry-first heat recovery ventilation (HRV) system allow the ARKA to comfortably handle conditions from -10°F to 120°F. Its one-piece molded fiberglass roof is designed not only to provide impressive insulation, but also efficiently sheds water and snow as well.
  • The 48-volt electrical architecture delivers 16.8kWh of lithium battery capacity, paired with a 3,600-watt inverter and multiple charging sources including solar, alternator, and shore power.
  • A 60-gallon insulated, heated freshwater tank with UV water purification system supports up to 14 days of fully self-sufficient off-grid operation (without A/C use).
  • Inside, a flexible cabover sleeping module (configurable as king, queen, or twin beds) and a convertible rear lounge provide seating for up to six and sleeping for up to four.
  • A cleverly designed shower and bathroom area maximizes every inch, while full-height van-style doors open up massive storage capability—and double as a gateway to immersive, open-air camping right at your tailgate.
  • The ARKA's torsion-free sub-frame lets the camper body and truck chassis flex independently over rough terrain, and it can tow up to 15,000 lbs.
  • Rugged extras like heavy-duty aluminum cabinetry with lockable compression latches, azdel backing in all panels, L-track system, on-board air compressor, and a heated gear garage reflect ARKA's focus on serious backcountry durability.
  • Winnebago Connect ties it all together through a touchscreen and companion app, offering real-time power and tank monitoring, multi-zone climate control, an inclinometer for off-grid leveling, mobile door locking, and Pet Minder alerts — even with offline pairing for true off-grid use.

Who is the Winnebago ARKA ideal for?

The Bottom Line When Comparing Winnebago’s Revel, EKKO & ARKA

Each of these three rigs represents a distinct step in scale, footprint, and capability:

  • Revel Series: Class B Van, Compact & Off-road Nimble
  • EKKO Series: Class C Motorhome, Spacious Basecamp
  • ARKA: Heavy-Duty Truck, Expedition Ready

The Revel remains the gold standard for compact, AWD off-road four-season van travel that fits anywhere, and its success is the reason this entire category exists today. Its arrival proved to the industry that off-grid, off-road adventure vans weren't a passing trend but a real and growing way modern travelers wanted to explore, opening the door for everything that came after it.

The EKKO bridges the gap by placing an insulated, highly livable Class C body onto the Transit and Sprinter AWD chassis for extra room and long-term comfort. And the ARKA pushes performance to its absolute limit, delivering unmatched self-sufficiency for deep 4x4 backcountry exploration. (Also be sure to check out how each performed in a recent off-road test drive event in this article!)

There's no single "best" rig, only the one that matches your crew, your gear, and how far off the grid you intend to range.
