Testing the All-New Winnebago ARKA
Testing the All-New Winnebago ARKA
Exploring far beyond the pavement, turning nowhere into somewhere.
By: Kenny Phillips
When most people picture a Winnebago, they may envision what Sabrina and I own: a large Class A RV parked in campgrounds with full hookups and traveling on paved roads. After spending several weeks testing the all-new Winnebago ARKA adventure truck across Arizona and New Mexico, I can confidently say this vehicle changes that perception completely.
I had the opportunity to take a pre-production Winnebago ARKA from Southern Arizona into Albuquerque, NM, then north into Flagstaff and Sedona before looping back home. The entire trip was done while dry camping, with no hookups, no reservations, and no real schedule. Just dirt roads, remote campsites, freezing temperatures, and a chance to see what this new adventure truck was truly capable of!
Very quickly, I realized the ARKA is not simply an RV with aggressive tires and some off-road styling. This is a purpose-built adventure vehicle designed for people who want to get way off the beaten path while still bringing along the comforts of an RV. Winnebago did a fantastic job combining a rugged exterior with a very comfortable, easy-to-maintain interior.

Why the Winnebago ARKA is Built for Exploration
In my opinion, the Winnebago ARKA is built for families who want to camp in places where you would normally expect to see Jeeps with rooftop tents or Tacomas set up for overlanding, not traditional RVs. It gives you the freedom to reach those remote areas without sacrificing comfort once you get there.
The ARKA I tested rode on massive 41-inch tires and featured a true 4x4 system with a low-range transfer case. It is also built on the very robust Ram 5500 turbo diesel chassis. That combination gave me the confidence to tackle terrain that I would never even consider with my Winnebago Vista.
One of the biggest differences I noticed compared to many “off-road capable” RVs currently on the market was that the ARKA never felt like it was barely hanging on. The ARKA has the capability to get you into and out of challenging terrain without an issue. I even thought I could easily recover someone else who did happen to get stuck, and I brought my recovery gear, just in case.
Engineering that Sets the ARKA Apart
One thing you will notice instantly while driving the Winnebago ARKA on or off-road is that it uses a zero-torsion mounting system that allows the RV box and chassis to flex independently from each other.
This is especially important off-road because uneven terrain can cause a truck chassis to twist significantly as the suspension articulates over rocks, ruts, and washouts. By allowing that movement to happen underneath the living area instead of transferring directly into it, the system helps reduce stress on the RV body itself, including cabinets, appliances, plumbing connections, windows, and other interior components.
This not only helps improve long-term durability but also reduces rattles and wear while creating a more refined ride when traveling off pavement. This gave me confidence to explore tough terrain without constantly worrying about damaging the integrity of the vehicle.
Real World Off-Road RVing Capability
In places like the Quebradas Backcountry Byway and San Lorenzo Canyon in New Mexico, I found myself driving deeper into remote areas simply because I knew the ARKA could handle it. The terrain across Arizona and New Mexico changes quickly, and having onboard air to adjust tire pressure depending on trail conditions made me want to add an air compressor to my Jeep build.
It was so convenient to hop out and plug the airline right into the ARKA to adjust those massive tires, either making them a bit softer for off-road driving or putting the air back in for the road ahead.
Whether I was maneuvering through uneven desert terrain or heading into colder forest roads near Flagstaff, the ARKA constantly encouraged exploration rather than limiting it. I wanted to keep going farther down a trail just to see what was around the next corner.
How the ARKA Offers Comfort After the Trail Ends
While the capability impressed me, what surprised me most was how comfortable the Winnebago ARKA felt once parked for the night.
Inside, Winnebago struck an excellent balance between rugged durability and comfort. The materials feel tough and easy to maintain, like the aluminum cabinets and drawers, which feel like they will hold up forever. There were also large overhead soft cabinets that we found useful for clothes, computer gear, camera equipment, and snacks.
The large U-shaped dinette quickly became my favorite place inside the RV. I used it for meals, editing videos, working on my laptop, and simply relaxing after long days of exploring.
The refrigerator and freezer were large enough to comfortably hold over a week’s worth of food for me and my wife, which paired perfectly with the ARKA’s off-grid capability. With 800 watts of solar, 8.4kWh Lithionics lithium battery, and a 3,600-watt inverter, the RV genuinely felt as though it was plugged into shore power, even while sitting deep in the desert miles from civilization.
That feeling of home was one of the coolest parts of the experience. Once you settled in for the evening, closed the doors, and turned on the lights, it became easy to forget you were completely off-grid.
Sleeping Under the Stars
My test vehicle was the crew cab Ram with the overhead loft bed, and this was the place to be at night. The bed itself was great: a Winnebago-designed WinnSleep mattress. You can configure the bed to be two twins, a queen, or a king. Sabrina and I converted it into a queen and used the center pieces as nightstands.
We have slept on a WinnSleep mattress before, and they are always great. Gone are the days of needing to throw away your stock RV mattress and replace it with an aftermarket one.
The other awesome feature in the overhead loft area was the skylight that opens. We were able to lie down, open the skylight, and watch the stars. One of our favorite things to look for is satellites passing overhead. You would be amazed at how many you can see in a single night!
Heated Floors Offer Consistent Warmth
I originally assumed heated floors in an RV were more gimmick than necessity. After spending several nights camping in temperatures below 25 degrees near Flagstaff, I became a complete believer.
Unlike a traditional furnace that can leave hot and cold spots throughout the coach, the heated floors created consistent warmth everywhere inside the ARKA. The heat quietly radiated upward, making the entire RV feel comfortable no matter where you were sitting.
What impressed me even more was the efficiency. The heated floors, water heater, and furnace all operated using the vehicle’s diesel fuel system. Even after four consecutive nights below freezing, the fuel gauge barely moved. That level of efficiency allowed me to stay off-grid for extended periods without constantly worrying about resources or planning my return to civilization.
A Smarter Shower Design
Winnebago also takes the shower experience to a new level. Inside the ARKA, you will find a large shower with a hidden toilet. I know that sounds strange in text, but it is true.
The toilet slides in and out of the shower and tucks behind a cabinet door. Once the toilet is put away, the shower space becomes much larger than what is typically offered in a traditional wet bath!
Final Thoughts on the New Winnebago ARKA
By the end of the trip, my overall impression of the Winnebago ARKA was simple: I absolutely loved it. The ARKA gives you the confidence to continue exploring and to keep wondering what is farther down the road. It feels rugged and durable, yet still extremely comfortable and user-friendly.
For me personally, it became the perfect adventure base camp. I was able to bring my bike, hiking gear, and everything else I needed for extended exploration while still knowing I had a comfortable place to return to every night. After long days outdoors, the ARKA provided all the comforts needed to cook a meal, relax, recharge, and prepare for the next adventure.
The all-new Winnebago ARKA feels like a major shift in what people will expect from an RV manufacturer. It is not simply designed to get you to the campground. It is designed to help you confidently explore what exists far beyond it.
The ARKA is for anyone who has ever looked down a dirt road and wondered what was at the end of it. The ARKA was built for that exact kind of adventure.
