Indiana Meanderers

Sue and Chris Knochel

This year’s September outing was held at Pla-Mor Campground in Bremen, Indiana on September 15-18. Ron and Peggy Campbell were first time wagon masters for our get-together and could not have provided any better weather conditions for the fall weekend! Sunny skies, warm days and cool nights with good food and lots of activities to keep us busy. We had a total of 13 coaches and trailers at the outing with 26 people. Attending the outing were Mike & LouAnn Bankowski, Wrede & Kathy Banta, Ron & Peggy Campbell, Mike & Kerry Ely, Mark & Chris Fuller, Glen & Janet Gish, Ron & Tammy Kline, Mike & Ellen McLaughlin, Dorothy Michalak, Gene & Kathy Rieck, Lori Tindall, Bob & Ruth Stoeckley, and Fred & Carol Thomas. We had a new couple join us for the outing and would like to give them a warm welcome. Chris & Sue Knochel from Kentland, Indiana came in their Winnebago Hike. They picked up their new trailer in May and have been enjoying their time camping in it. They joined both the Meanderers and the Who’s Yur Winnies clubs. We look forward to seeing them at outings in the future! Those who arrived early went into Nappanee for a nice dinner at Hunter’s Hideaway Wednesday evening. We got to see several attractions being set up for the Nappanee Apple Festival which took place from Thursday to Sunday. Thursday evening we were treated to a delicious homemade dinner cooked by the Campbells and their son. They served us gnocchi soup, vegetable soup, pulled pork sliders, coleslaw, Mississippi mud cake, and pistachio cake. It was a most excellent meal and noone went away from it hungry!

100-lbs of pie dough & 400-lbs of apples

On Friday, attendees explored Nappanee to shop and spend time at the Apple Festival, which is always held the third weekend in September. There were carnival rides, over 150 exhibitors, and numerous food vendors. The Nappanee Apple Festival began in 1975 and with over 80,000 visitors annually has grown to be one of the largest festivals in the state of Indiana. In case you missed it, one of the restaurants was home to the famous 7’ apple pie which weighs in at 600-lbs. We bought two pieces and yes it was yummy! Friday night we caravanned to Mullet’s Dining where we were treated to their Amish family style meal of chicken, roast beef, mashed potatoes & gravy, corn, noodles, and pie. Good food, conversation, and then back to the campground for a campfire and games.

Our finished bookmarks

Saturday, several of the men went to the Dutch Village restaurant in Nappanee for breakfast while us ladies got our beauty sleep and then gathered for Crafts with Tammy. There were 13 of us for crafts and cookies. Nothing beats a Saturday morning bookmark coloring craft activity with coffee and cookies. Thanks to Tammy for once again providing us with a fun way to spend some time being creative and visiting! Saturday afternoon was free for shopping, touring, exploring, or just resting and relaxing at the campground. The Campbells and Bantas drove up to Elkhart and toured the RV Hall of Fame & Museum, which features a variety of historical recreational vehicles from Winnebago, Airstream, and other American makers. Well worth a visit if you’re in the area. Saturday evening we had a pitch-in dinner outside at some picnic tables which worked out perfect with the beautiful fall weather. After dinner we had a short meeting, a campfire and games at the building. Sunday morning we gathered for donuts from Rise ‘n Roll Bakery & Deli before calling the outing to an end. Thanks to Ron & Peggy for the terrific job they did as wagon masters and first time hosts. The food was wonderful and we all enjoyed spending time in and around Nappanee. Our club is slowly growing again and we appreciate all who take part in helping to make our times together such a fun experience. Thanks to everyone for coming! Already looking forward to seeing many of you in October. Safe travels and good health wherever you may be in the coming weeks!
